Broadstairs vs Folkestone

Broadstairs Cricket Club faced challenging conditions on a baking hot day with a dry pitch as they clashed against Folkestone. Winning the toss and electing to bat, Broadstairs hoped to capitalize on the advantage, but their innings quickly unravelled due to poor shot selection, consistent opposition bowling, and significant movement off the pitch.

The hosts found themselves struggling at 47-6 before Jake Benfield offered a glimmer of hope. With a remarkable exhibition of clean hitting, he smashed a series of boundaries, scoring 36 runs out of his total 46 purely from boundaries. His aggressive approach inevitably led to his dismissal when he attempted another maximum, caught at the long-off boundary for 46 off 26 balls.

At 99-7, the team set their sights on a competitive target of 130. A vital last-wicket partnership between Chris Kidd (17) and Bradley Ellison (9) added 27 runs, enabling Broadstairs to finish on 147 at the end of the 42nd over. This left them with the critical task of defending a modest tota. The tone of the second innings seemed to have been set early-on when overseas batter Dhanday was dropped and he capitalized on the opportunity, anchoring Folkestone's innings with an impressive 63. At 126-4, the visitors looked like they were cruising to a straightforward victory. However, following Dhanday’s departure, the runs started to dry up and Folkestone were looking quite nervy with just 3 wickets left and still 16 runs to get. Despite Broadstairs’ best efforts including 2 wickets apiece for Chris Kidd, Bradley Ellison and Matt Frewin, Folkestone crawled over the finishing line in the 38th over with just 2 wickets remaining.

With this disappointing defeat coming on the heels of a dramatic victory the previous week, Broadstairs will need to regroup and bring their best game to their upcoming fixture away to Leeds and Broomfield. As the mid-point of the season approaches, the team will have to work even harder to steer clear of relegation concerns.
